Wayne and I were best friends all through primary school. We virtually lived at each other’s houses. We drifted apart when we attended different high schools, and although I worked a couple of summers at Matthews Brothers Roofing, we just went our separate ways until I had a chance meeting with Jim and Doreen and obtained Wayne’s email address. I wasn’t living in Canada, but on one of my return visits my son and I had lunch with Wayne and his son in Toronto. I fondly remember two things from those childhood days: Grandma Matthews Hamburger and macaroni casserole (which I still make) and Wayne’s statement “Don’t feel sorry for me because I don’t have a mother – I have lots of mothers” . He was describing the love he received from many people including my mother. My condolences to his family.
