Obituary of Catherine M. Crocker (nee Gibson)

Quietly, at the close of the day on Monday, August 26, 2024, Catherine Marie Crocker (née Gibson) passed away after a long life of service to education, guiding, and family. Much loved wife for almost 71 years of John Pritchett Crocker and devoted mother of Wendy (Gordon) and David (Peggy). Her two grandchildren, James and Kylie, were her pride and joy. Catherine is also survived by sisters Gladys, Carolyn (Chris), and Esther (Paul) and brothers George (Pat) and David (Val) as well as numerous family members in the Lucknow, Goderich, and Kincardine area. Predeceased by her parents, Samuel and Esther Gibson, brothers Roy (Evelyn) and Ernie (Mary), brother-in-law Alvin, and sister Dorothy (Donald).

Catherine was a natural teacher with a gift of finding ways to engage learners, including her own children. A passionate outdoorswoman, she loved the time she shared with John and the family at Wood Lake. Even as her vision dimmed, Catherine immersed herself in nature enjoying her garden, identifying birds by their calls, and accompanying John as he fished. Honoured as a YWCA “Woman of Distinction”, Catherine loved being a Guider and advocated for camp experiences as a way for girls to learn the ways of the outdoors.

According to Catherine’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a private family service will be held. Donations honouring the gift of Catherine’s life may be made to Operation Smile Canada or the STEGH Foundation (re: Transforming Tomorrow campaign). Arrangements entrusted to the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160).

The spirit of this amazing woman lives on in the trill of a cardinal, the sunshine dancing on the lake, and the glorious colours of a late summer sunset.
