Obituary of John C. "Jack" Cowan

Of St. Thomas, formerly of Belmont and Barrow Bay, ON, age 90, passed away at AgeCare Aylmer on Sunday, June 9, 2024. Beloved husband for 69 years to Caroline “Carole” (née Pyman) Cowan. Dearly loved father of Pat Skirtschak (late Myron), Larry Cowan (Catherine “Kay”), and Anne Preston (John). He was proud of his grandchildren, Blaine Skirtschak (Jaime), Stacey Krol (Steve), Allison Skirtschak, Kendra Cowan (Scott Parker), Jordan Preston (Heidi Friedel), Curtis Preston, late Justine Preston, and the late Matthew Cowan. Proud great grandfather of Lucas, Charlize, Kiley, McKayla, Dominic, Sky, Paige, and Ben. He was the brother of the late Michael Cowan. Jack is also remembered by his sister-in-law, Norma Brander, and his nieces, nephews, and their families.

 

Born in Clinton, ON, May 31, 1934, he was a son of the late Howard and Lillian (née Liddel) Cowan. Jack was a retired dairy company supervisor. He was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, St. Thomas, a charter member of the Belmont Lions Club, and a former active member of the Barrow Bay & District Sport Fishing Association. Jack also coached hockey in Belmont for many years.

 

Relatives and friends will be received by the family at the Sifton Funeral Home, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160) on Tuesday, June 18, 2024 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. A service to celebrate Jack’s life will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, 55 Hincks St., St. Thomas on Wednesday, June 19, 2024 at 11:30 a.m., followed by a reception in the Rodney Hall of the church. Cremation has taken place. Private interment in Eastnor Cemetery, Eastnor Twp. Flowers respectfully declined.  If so desired, please consider a memorial donation to the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital Foundation (Transforming Tomorrow campaign), the Alzheimer Society Southwest Partners, or the charity of your choice.
