Obituary of Alva J. "Al" Sproule

SPROULE, Alva J. “Al”, of St. Thomas, passed away at the St. Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Monday, March 12, 2018, in his 81st year. Loving husband of Nancy (née Chapman) Calvert Sproule, and the late Joan (née Bradley) Sproule (2001). Step-father of Todd Calvert (Brenda) of Kitchener, and Sara Calvert of St. Thomas. Proud Papa of little Caitlyn and little Russel Calvert. Al is also fondly remembered by many in-laws and special nieces and nephews. Born in St. Thomas, ON, October 24, 1937, he was the son of the late William and Irene (née Campbell) Sproule. Al attended Balaclava Street Public School and the St. Thomas Collegiate Institute. He then served overseas for a period of three years as a Chief Petty Officer with the Sea Cadets on an aircraft carrier, the HMS Magnificent. Al was a brakeman/conductor on the CN Railway for 35 years. He was a member of St. Andrew’s United Church, St. Thomas, a former member of the Centennial Sports Club, and an avid sports fan. Relatives and friends will be received by the family at the SIFTON FUNERAL HOME, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160) on Wednesday evening, March 14th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. The funeral service will be held at St. Andrew’s United Church, 60 West Avenue, St. Thomas on Thursday, March 15th at 11:00 a.m., followed by interment in Elmdale Memorial Park. Flowers respectfully declined. Memorial donations to St. Andrew’s United Church re: Growing Youth or the charity of one’s choice will be gratefully acknowledged.
