Cousin Kelly who played basketball with Gerry at St. Pauls sent me the obituary. Gerry and I had insanely great fun at Lathey Pool.- most memorable event was when Gerry almost drowned in our Aquacade during his magician's act where a diving tank was hidden in water after we lowered Gerry in a wood box in chains into the pool. A metal weight we put in the box to weigh it down hit Gerry on the head and rendered him unconscious for a few seconds!!
The attached photos are one from Lathey pool where we played cards every night and the other from the site at Borden where a military airplane had crash landed. Gerry coached our water polo team in the Saskatchewan Summer Games
Condolences to Gerry's Ontario family and to sister Marg who was on all the lifeguards' fantasy woman list.

Beth: Our sincere condolences on Gerry's passing. We met only briefly, as renters of your lovely cottage home on Buck Lake in the early 2000s, but felt like guests while we were there. We hope that your many happy memories bring comfort to you at this time. All the best, Kathy and Paul Roberts

My sincerest condolences on Gerry's passing. I was indeed fortunate to have known Gerry when we were growing up in Saskatoon. Gerry was a very kind and giving person and as others have stated a True Gentleman. I have many fond memories of our time spent together as lifeguards and hanging out with friends. I will always be indebted to the kindness shown to me during my formative years.

In honour of our good friend Gerry!
Gerry had quite an impact on our lives! Our 3 children (now 51, 49, 43 years old) all remember Gerry, and have fond memories of him. We all knew Gerry was a kind and gentle soul, never wanting to be in the limelight; and always thinking about others before himself. Gerry was always there to help - we remember him helping to make our cement step and walkway, helping to plant shurbs in our first home, and installing our first icemaker in our fridge way back in 1974 (an icemaker was quite a thing back then). As a businessman, I knew Gerry to be a good merchant with a 6th sense for knowing what would sell and how to sell it. We grew-up and gained our business legs together! Gerry taught me about being organized - his office was always imaculate and everything was filed just "so" - he was a dedicated worker very effective in everything he did. Unflappable, likeable, good-natured, and always a real gentleman is what we remember most of Gerry!
Gerry always had a passion for his roots in the Saskatoon Sears Store. I only knew him briefly back in Saskatoon, as he was the Manager of the Store ball tem. He continued this history with his leadership in the Eastern Saskatoon Golf Classic (E.S.I.G.C.) for many years. It was our way of seeing everyone from Saskatoon at least once a year. What fun !!
When Gerry met Beth, we knew there was something special growing that would turn-out to be the cornerstone of a strong and loving relationship for almost 40 years of marriage. Their Christmas brunches were always a highlight! Their love of cottage country and the North was a precursor to all of us who experienced it through them, and have found happiness here since.
Beth, our thoughts, hearts, and prayers go out to you! We hope that soon your loss will turn to warm memories of your Gerry, and will allow you to smile when you think of what a great man he was.
Gerry, rest well, knowing you have lived a good and gentle life, which was a perfect fit for you! You are gone; but none of us will ever forget you. We are all better for having known you!!
The pictures attached are Gerry and Dale enjoying a steak after a day of helping us at our home in Burlington, of Gerry & Beth's Wedding, the Gerry leading the famous ESIGC.
With Love, Sandra & Dale Heiydt & family

We were so saddened to hear of Gerry’s passing.
He was a dear friend and person and we will forever remember him as kind, humble, interesting and amusing gentleman. He had a quiet ability to tell stories that kept everyone intrigued and usually chuckling.
We enjoyed many wonderful nights having dinners with the Connors at the home of our mutual friends the Chow’s. After the eat-a-thon we often retired to the pool table where Gerry would continue to regale us with interesting tales…quietly take our money while running the table.
A great person and friend to so many. God bless Gerry.

My most cherished memories of Uncle Gerry are of the wonderful times we spent at the cottage when Lara and I were kids.
I loved taking the boat to Honey Harbour with him to buy the morning paper and was delighted when he told me he’d like to build us a tree house that we christened “Fort Sifton”.
On one single occasion when I was 6 years old, Uncle Gerry slightly burned the hot dogs he was barbecuing for lunch. I then felt the need to enthusiastically remind him “Don’t burn the hotdogs!” every time he cooked them for us for the next 7 years or so.
He was always so kind, funny, patient and interested in others around him. And despite my childhood teasing he was an excellent cook and always played an integral role in helping Grandma perfect Christmas dinner. He was a wonderful man and we’ll miss him greatly.

Dear Marg
Hello, after all these years. I read of Gerry’s passing in the Saskatoon paper and memories of him came flooding back from our high school years. Gerry was always very nice to me despite the fact that I was his little sister’s friend. Always friendly and kind. I’m sure you do miss him very much; it is hard to lose a sibling.
My sincerest condolences to you and your family
God bless

Uncle Gerry was funny and generous, with only kind words for those around him. He gave his undivided attention and his smile and laugh lit up rooms and hearts. I would give anything to be able to see him one more time and hug him, and to tell him how much brighter the world was with him here.

Gerry had the good fortune to be sandwiched between two sisters. His older sister, Pat, couldn't wait for him to arrive and adored and doted on him his entire life. His younger sister, Marg, followed him around relentlessly and put him on a hero's pedestal. He was sweet and funny and kept us entertained with his antics, stories and jokes. He was delighted with life and was always on the verge of a smile or laugh. He could be your average, pesky brother at home but once you stepped outside the house he was fiercely protective and proud of his sisters.
He had health challenges starting when he was a baby but didn't ever use that as an excuse to get out of activities or shirk responsibilities. He didn't want to miss out on anything and tackled everything with joyful enthusiasm. When told by his physician to not play sports, he embraced them. He swam competitively and lifeguarded for many years. He enjoyed basketball as a player and later as a referee. He excelled at many sports and enjoyed the playing more than the winning. He brought home many awards for sportsmanship.
Given his sociable character and love of meeting people it was natural for him to begin his working career in retail. Whatever his position and wherever he went his hallmark was his eagerness to satisfy his customers or clients in a quiet, understated manner. Gerry loved to travel; when he landed in another country he was there to immerse himself in their culture and enjoyed the differences but always found more in common with them.
Gerry took such joy in life no matter where he was or what he faced. We miss him terribly.
From Gerry's loving sisters, Pat MacKay and Margaret Johnson

Beth,
It has been a very long time since we all shared “”Sears” space. But time doesn’t diminish the high lites and the memories of terrific people. Gerry was the penultimate gentleman, clever, intelligent, always on an even keel.
Sounds very much that your retirement years together were terrific. May those memories sustain you thru this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Stew MacLeod

Uncle Gerry’s calm demeanour and quiet contemplation always resulted in some very witty humour around the Sifton family dining table. In a family of mainly extroverts, he helped bring balance to conversations. I will miss his warm smile and clever sense of humour.

Gerry was the consummate gentleman who we loved traveling with. Every evening before dinner we would all enjoy a bit of scotch together and talk about the day. The world is less joyful because Gerry is not here to give us his sweet smile and share his generous heart. He will be sorely missed by anyone who was lucky enough to ever know him, and especially by us. Judi Janofsky & Rich Steck
