I volunteered at STEGH for a few years with Melba, our shifts overlapped each other for phones and directions. Melba was such a kind and gentle lady. Always smiling, enthusiastic and helpful to visitors, caregivers and patients. Her eyes would light up when she talked about her family! I’m grateful for our meeting. My deepest condolences to her family.

Melba was always the same friendly person whenever I met her. After years of no contact, I started seeing her again, as she worked with my daughter, Sherry, at STEGH. Sherry had mentioned this really nice lady she was working with, and when I saw her with Sherry, I thought, “of course, Melba!... one the of most genuine people I’ve ever known.” Her father drove school bus my four high school years, and he was very kind to me as well. Frome/Shedden has lost a truly good one!

Dear Bud and family,
I was indeed saddened to hear of Melba's passing and want to send my sincere condolences. The Marrs and Bogarts were neighbors on the family farms and we kids grew up together. Eventually farms were sold, kids grew up and moved away but we never forgot our roots. So I wanted to express our sympathy during this difficult time. It certainly is a time for many memories.
Recently I met a granddaughter of Melba's who updated me on the family and Melba and I were able to share some letters.
This sad occasion does bring back many memories and I wanted to let you know I'm thinking of you.

I taught with Melba at Southwold. She was a kind and welcoming person who treated everyone with respect. Melba was a terrific teacher and as a relatively new teacher I learned much from her. I will miss her smiling face at the Southwold Retirement Lunches and the Elgin Reirement Events. My condolences to Bud and her family.

I had the pleasure for 12 years of teaching at Southwold School with Melba, whom I'm sure her former students would agree, was one of a kind. As someone who was always mindful of the community in which she lived, Southwold benefited in many ways, as did her students. As a staff member, she contributed to the excellent education students received in many ways and continued serving others in many ways even in retirement. The staff at Southwold was like family and as a member of that family we will certainly miss Melba. May the memories the family has of Melba be as wonderful as the memories I have as one who taught with her.

There are no words!! Melba and I have been together-since I was 6 months old. She was always upset when we were young that I was older than her, but in the last few years, we have had many laughs about me being the oldest and that made her happy. Our farms were not far apart and when we were little girls, we would walk across the fields and meet each other and go to her house or mine to play. We were almost more than sisters. When we were little we fought like kids did-but when we grew up there was never a cross word nor disagreement and that is a treasure that I will always remember. For years, we talked on the phone every night around 7p.m. and we had stories to tell of our day, however crazy it was, memories that nobody else would know about, our kids, our feelings and everything else in between. I already miss her so much, and I have even changed our dinner hour to near 7pm so that I won't be waiting for her call, because the first few days she was sick, I was waiting. She was a gem-always saw the good in everyone, was kind to everyone, especially the "underdog" might I say.She would tell me about her students that she would run into once in a while and was always so interested in them. She was a strong lady and came out strong in her last days-she fought to the end. July, Scott and Jamie, you have taken wonderful care of Mom-even though it was not easy-you never faltered and personally, I thank you for that. Many times I wished I lived next door. You know how much I loved your Mom, and will never ever forget all the good times that we had-too numerous to mention. Love you all.

Bud, Julie, Scott, and Jamie sending condolences to you all. We had the opportunity to meet Melba as part of my mother's memorial service (Bud's cousin Wendy). Bud and Melba were such a big help with all of the arrangements and so kind to open their home to us for a visit on that occasion. Melba was such a lovely, warm woman and it is clear she has helped many in her lifetime. Sending all our love and prayers. Katherine, Simon, Elena & Jamie Binns

Bud, Julie, Scott, and Jamie, please accept our condolences on the loss of a very special lady. Mrs. Marr had a profound impact on the lives of so many people. Her encouragement and interest in her students did not diminish when they left her classroom. She endlessly boosted spirits with her warm smile and heartfelt concern about you and what you were involved in. I feel extremely fortunate to have had Mrs. Marr as my first teacher in grades one and two, and to be involved many years later in community initiatives with her, and to regard her as a sincere and supportive friend. She will be greatly missed but forever remembered for her unfailing kindness.

It has been a long time since my childhood days at McBrides Church with your family but I deeply cherish all my memories. When I was only 13 I went to Florida with Melba's mom and my friends the Hollands. I know where Melba got many of her amazing qualities! (The apple really doesn't fall far from the tree!) Thirty years ago, when I was beginning my teaching career, Melba passed on some of her many amazing resources to me. I was blessed to be a "kindred spirit" and enjoyed being a cousin with both Ada and Melba (age and generations never mattered because they were both always young at heart). I will also treasure the visits and notes Melba wrote to my mom (Ferne, nee Hutchings) whenever she was in the hospital. I have included a photo from a hospital visit in September of 2018. I will continue to cherish Melba and I pray that your family will find joy despite the sorrow. Many blessings. Love, Jeanette Voaden (nee Jeanne Jameson)

She was one of many extended family members in the Frome community for me. Always positive and had a knack of delegating by making you think it was your idea all along at those church suppers, lol! Never my teacher, but she kept an eye out for me and always asked after me and my family. So kind. She was well known in the community among the kids for being the only neighbor to hand out pop on Halloween back in the day. Big, big heart. She will be greatly missed. Our condolences to Bud, Scott, Julie and Jamie, and all the extended family.

There are people in your life who make a huge difference and impact. Mrs Marr was one of those people. She was my grade 4 teacher who instilled in me a true thirst for life long learning. She was always interested in and kept track of what you were doing in life. She always treated me with respect and care. A couple years ago she told me I should call her Melba. I was horrified. There was no way as I had such great respect and appreciation for her as a person. She was a true gift! She often told me how she taught at the little school house on corner of West Magdala Rd in Southwold. My mom lives next door and would clean. I was an infant and Mrs Marr would play with me so I guess I have had a lifelong connection with her. My thoughts and prayers are with her family. I know she will be greatly missed.
