Obituary of Olive I. Laing (nee Henderson)
LAING, Olive I. (née Henderson), of London, formerly of St. Thomas and Winnipeg, passed away peacefully at the McCormick Home on Tuesday, October 24, 2017, in her 100th year. Beloved wife of the late G. Bailey Laing (October 25, 1994). Loved mother of Shirley West and her husband Gary of London. Olive is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was the last remaining member of her generation in our family, having been predeceased by three sisters, Alice Rae, Vera Hodgson, and Edna MacLeod, and by a brother, Stuart Henderson. Born in Roland, Manitoba on October 4, 1918, she spent her childhood and early adult years in Morden, Manitoba and Winnipeg. Although Olive moved to St. Thomas from Winnipeg in her late 20’s, she remained a Westerner at heart. She was the daughter of the late Samuel and Catherine (née Linn) Henderson. Olive was a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, St.Thomas, and previously a member of the former Alma Street Presbyterian Church where she was an active volunteer for many years. Olive was a voracious reader; she loved the classics and poetry, in particular. She also enjoyed many sports, including a good game of badminton or golf with her family and friends. In keeping with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A public memorial service will be held at the SIFTON FUNERAL HOME, 118 Wellington St., St. Thomas (519-631-1160) on Friday, November 24th at 1:30 p.m. Relatives and friends will be received by the family one hour prior to the service. Olive’s cremated remains will be interred privately in Elmdale Memorial Park. Flowers respectfully declined. Memorial donations to the charity of one’s choice will be gratefully acknowledged.
